Opening Hours
The direct answer: the museum, the exhibitions, the castle interiors and the library open 10am to 6pm and close on Mondays, except from 1 July to 31 August when they open seven days a week. The courtyard and the 500-metre rampart walk are open every day, 8:30am to 7pm, and until 8pm from 1 July to 31 August. The moat gardens open at 8am. Everything outside the museum is free.

The Monday trap, stated plainly

Outside 1 July to 31 August, the museum is closed on Mondays. The castle is not. The gate is open, the courtyard is open, the rampart walk is open, the moat gardens are open, and all of it is free. Every Monday I watch people reach the drawbridge, read the closed sign for the musée, decide the whole place is shut and walk back towards the station without ever climbing the wall. That is the single most common wasted visit in this city. If Monday is the day you have, take it: 500 metres of curtain wall, seven towers, and the white tufa palace facing you across the courtyard, for nothing.

Insider tip

On a Monday, do the ramparts in the morning and put a guided walk of the old town in the afternoon. The museum is the only thing shut, and the streets around the castle are not.

Hours in full

The four days the castle is closed all year

1 January, 1 May, 1 November and 25 December. Those are the only dates when turning up gets you nothing at all. Every other day of the year you can at least walk the walls. If you are planning around seasons rather than single days, the best time to visit page takes the hours above and turns them into a month-by-month answer.

What works

  • The free half opens at 8:30am, ninety minutes before the museum
  • Seven-day museum opening through July and August
  • The moat gardens open at 8am, which is the quietest hour of the day

Worth knowing

  • Closed Mondays outside July and August, museum only
  • Ticket desk shuts at 5:30pm, not 6pm
  • Last entry to the ramparts is 15 minutes before closing

How long the hours give you

A 10am museum opening and a 5:30pm ticket desk is a long day if you want it, but most people need far less than that: about 30 minutes on the walls and an hour and a half to two hours in the museum. I break the timings down on how long you need. If your Monday is fixed and the museum matters to you, the licensed monumental tour includes 30 minutes inside the castle through a separate entrance and runs alongside the cathedral and La Psalette; the two-hour private walking tour is the other way to fill the day. Both versions, and the three that do not involve a booking, are laid out on the five ways to visit.
