Is the Château des ducs de Bretagne worth visiting?
The free half is worth anyone’s time
Here is the thing the postcards get wrong. From the street the château is a black granite war fortress, seven towers and a wall built from granite blocks with courses of schist. Walk through the gate and the mood changes completely: the fifteenth-century ducal residence is flamboyant Gothic with Renaissance touches, built in white tufa, with sixteenth- and eighteenth-century buildings alongside it. Black outside, white inside. That contrast is the best thing about the place, it takes ten seconds to see, and it costs nothing. Then you climb the wall and walk the 500 metres round the top. I have crossed the moat gardens most mornings for years and it has not worn out yet.

If you have three hours in Nantes, one of them booked on a tour, and you came for medieval atmosphere rather than social history, do the free half and put the ticket money into the rest of the day. Is a guided tour worth it on top?
